Abstract

Materials: Civilian : 265 general hospitals, 397 Clinics, 2 diving apparatus association and 3 others that are registered with Korean Hospital Association(KHA). Military : maritime medical center and 14 others.

Method: First, I made an inquiry by phone to 664 medical facilities registered with the KHA and found out their chamber holding status. Secondly, I forwarded the questionnaire to 54 facilities that held or used to hold the hyperbaric chamber and received 17 responses. Among these 54, I visited 4 medical and most of the military facilities that treat DCS actively. The questionnaire included required personnel, equipments, and general status in order to treat DCS. And I personally examined the data based on the questionnaire when visited these facilities. For the reference, I requested documents and materials to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Industrial Manpower Corporation, the Korea Commercial Diving Technician Association and NDSTC.

Results: Total 47 facilities hold the chamber and 16 facilities have treated DCS at least once. The correct DCS diagnosis was rare and the most chamber operators were not medical personnel. The nurses operated the champer in some facilities, however, most of them answered they didn¡¯t completed the regular hyperbaric medicine courses, yet limited to the internal training. The loopholes of the regulations related to the hyperbaric environment were identified. The understanding of the DCS and HBOT is insufficient and there is neither the hyperbaric medicine education nor the certification system.

Conclusions: Explore the ways toward an increase of the recognition about HBOT. Introduce the organization of the Hyperbaric medicine association and related certification system. Regulation complement and national support. Complement the education system for the divers.
